George
Smith Ag Service, Inc. began as a Mobile Feed Milling Service in October 1964 by George
Smith and his father-in-law Hardy Sledge by purchasing Curt Davis Mobile Milling Co. in
Fairfield, Illinois. George had worked for them during high school and was an operator
immediately out of high school and became manager of feed business at age 19.
New name was Smith & Sledge Feed Service. They also sold bag fertilizer and delivered
to farms along with custom farming and tenant farming. Mr. Sledge retired in 1973 and sold
his portion to George Smith and his son. The business has continued to grow adding many
services such as liquid fertilizer, chemicals, dry fertilizer, bulk feeds, limestone,
seeds, custom application and agronomic advisory services.
In 1992 the business was incorporated and the operation grew to 5 locations. George was
President & C.E.O. at this time outside investment in the company occurred. They
acquired a seed processing plant and became active in growing and processing commercial
seed to meet and participate in the new seed technology that has become so important for
area farmers. Many farmers have contracted with them for seed production which ends up in
several of the South Eastern States.
Again, as the business grew and prospered a big change in ownership occurred. In 2003 the
ownership portion of outside investors was purchased by the George Smith family. They
continue to operate the business with George and wife Doris turning much of the management
over to Jr. Smith and Ron Smith.
Each year they continue to expand as technologies become available that are beneficial to
the business and their customers. The loyal customer base and great employees keep the
business successful and encouraged to continue for many years to come.
The company has always looked for ways to improve both the environment and civil areas of
our communities. The company gives employees time to serve on committee boards and help in
community efforts while on payroll and furnish equipment if needed. There are 3 volunteer
Fire Departments, 2 school boards, county government, several churches and township
boards, that our employees serve to help make our community better places to live. It is
their goal to help provide a better community to live in.
The business employs 30 full time and 10 to 12 part time individuals, many of them with 25
years or more experience. |
